It has been a year since G25 emerged as a civil society organisation with an Open Letter to Malaysians dated 7 December 2014. Since then, we have issued a number of public statements relating to the administration of Islam as well as on governance issues.
In addition, we have organised two successful public forums in Penang and Kuala Lumpur to discuss the concepts of maqasid shariah and wassatiyah, which the government is emphasising as the way forward for this predominantly Muslim country.
G25 has embraced these two Islamic principles of moderation as the theme for our forums (Islam in A Constitutional Democracy) as well as for the G25 book (Breaking The Silence), which was graciously launched by Yang Berhormat Mulia Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah on 5th December 2015 when he declared open the recent forum.
We are grateful for the support that we have received from Malaysian society. We have also benefitted greatly from engaging with prominent leaders to seek their opinion and guidance on our proposals regarding the administration of Islam as well as on matters of governance among public institutions that we have raised in our Open Letter and subsequent public statements.
G25 would like to take this opportunity to state that when we address Islamic matters, we undertake prior consultations with those scholars who are experts on religion to seek their advice before we make any statements. It should also be noted that within G25 itself, we have sufficient knowledge about the constitution, the law and the system of managing the economy to be able to comment with confidence when we encounter any contentious issues that adversely affect the rights of citizens and their well-being. As denial of citizen rights and poor governance will have impact on national unity, peace and stability and consequently the economy, G25 considers that it is our duty to speak up on behalf of the people when we see failures and omissions in the delivery of justice.
We, the members of G25 would like to wish all Malaysians a Happy and Prosperous New Year.
